Although Delphine Seyrig became famous as the star of films by Chantal Akerman, François Truffaut, Alain Resnais and Luis Buñuel, she was a powerful voice of the French feminist movement in the 1960s and 1970s, advocating for women’s reproductive rights (abortion) and the rights of sex workers. Since women’s performances in the film industry were restricted to male visual pleasure she began to work with film-makers who dismantled this voyeuristic relationship (Chantal Akerman, Marguerite Duras, Ulrike Ottinger and others).
With fellow activist filmmaker Carole Roussopoulos and translator Ioana Wieder, she founded one of the first activist video collectives Les Insoumuses (Defiant Muses), a neologism combining muse and defiance. Callisto McNulty illustrates this unsung aspect of Seyrig’s career in her riveting and subversively funny documentary, which comprises film clips, television interviews with misogynistic politicians and intellectuals, and excerpts from the radical protest videos that Seyrig made with Carole Roussopoulos.
The screening will be followed by a Skype talk with the director (in English). Moderated by Petra Meterc.
