In 1996, the Association for the Promotion of Women in Culture – City of Women was established as a legal entity, responsible for the organisation of the International Contemporary Arts Festival – City of Women. In 1995, the festival was initiated by a group of visionary women who prepared the first edition within the frame of a no longer existing governmental institution called the Women’s Policy Office.
The City of Women Association gradually professionalised, and its structure changed accordingly, as reflected in the list below. In 2014, the executive and programme direction were formally split for the first time. In addition, the function of the honorary president was introduced.
From its initial focus on the annual festival, the City of Women Association expanded its activities throughout the years. Today, it produces new artworks, maintains its library and archive, educates and mentors, advocates for better working conditions and equal opportunities in the arts and culture, participates in public debates and campaigns, and engages in a number of art-based community projects.
We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to the people who have enabled the growth and success of the City of Women since its inception in the 1990s:
Artistic Director and Festival Director, President of the City of Women Association
1995–1998
... to those people who have been a part of our core team throughout the years:
... and those people who have built our visual identity or provided technical support:
