Hiroshima mon amour

A timeless
classic on the subject of memory and oblivion, based on the screenplay by
Marguerite Duras. After the Second World War, a French actress (Emmanuelle
Riva) is filming an anti-war film in Hiroshima. She becomes involved in a
passionate affair with a married Japanese architect (Eiji Okada). They tell
each other stories.
“At the
threshold of the 1960s, Resnais was a lot more than a cineaste: he was a
seismographer. A terrible thing happened to him; he captured the essential
moment of the contemporary time when one had to – in film art and elsewhere –
consider one character more – the human species. But this character was just
negated (concentration camps), atomised (nuclear bomb) and humiliated
(torture), and the traditional film wasn’t capable of ‘portraying’ this. A form
had to be found. And Resnais did it.” (Serge Daney)
