xx SIMONA SEMENIČ SEASON

Slovenia / 2018 / 60'
Performance

The infamous photographs of Maja Smrekar and Simona Semenič appeared in public only a few days before the Slovenian Cultural Holiday and the Prešeren Award ceremony, triggering innumerable aggressive chauvinist comments: “If she could abuse the Slovenian flag, it would be appropriate to abuse the flagpole, too. Stick her on it … and barbecue her. Artistic performance. God forgive me.” The liberal public greeted the hate speech and the threats of violence either with indifference or with outrage, once again giving in as the public space was being poisoned with appeals for blood. The text of the S*S sound performance is based entirely on web comments, tweets and media statements by more than 50 anonymous authors.

“S*S is a simple hour-long event of sound and theatre; various wordplays to the title come to mind. First and foremost, the play is a response to web commenting which has long been proof that the possibility of free speech, enabled by the online media, gives more voice to hate speech and intolerant responses, instigated by trolls, than it does to democratisation or to the plurality of opinions.”
(Rok Bozovičar, “In Defence of Art and Culture”, Dnevnik, 11 May 2008, p. 32)

Tickets: €6

After the performance (19. 10.), Alja Lobnik will host a Public Tribune where viewers will have the chance to discuss the play.
