Dirty Diaries / Personal Porno Provocations by thirteen Swedish Women

Porn and feminism don't sound like the most obvious match, but this is the concept of Mia Engberg's project. She has invited twelve Swedish women to reveal their own personal sexual visions on film. Their task was to film themselves as well as what they find sexually arousing. The result is thirteen widely differing and deeply personal pornographic films. But apart from the personal perspective, the film's manifesto also has a political message, as it, among other things, encourages us to smash capitalism and patriarchism and fight against the traditionally sexist form of pornography. Mia Engberg always moves on the fringes of society with her films about gay skinheads, vegans, gender-benders and street children. There is plenty of DIY-attitude in the productions, which thereby exemplify an important alternative to mainstream porn which has always been light years away from being art.

The idea of creating Dirty Diaries emerged after Engberg and some of her friends had produced Come Together for the Stockholm International Film Festival. It was a short film where each participant filmed themselves with mobile phone cameras while masturbating. The film received a large amount of negative commentary, primarily from men, who complained about the actor-photographers being unattractive. To Engberg, this was proof that pornographic films demanded that their female participants should be seen as pleasing to its primarily male audience.
