Creating New Collectivities: Discussion with Kumjana Novakova
After the 2024 City of Women Festival, in collaboration with the Autumn Film School (Jesenska filmska šola) of the Slovenian Cinematheque, we hosted Macedonian filmmaker, researcher, and curator Kumjana Novakova. Following the screenings of two films, Silence of Reason and Disturbed Earth, which address the Srebrenica massacre and gender based violence against women in Foča during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a conversation took place with the filmmaker as part of the event Creating New Collectivities. In the recording of the conversation, you will be able to learn more about the making of both films, the politics of the film lens, the archiving of memories, and how film can give voice to the experiences of survivors.
“In general, I think it is impossible to find meaning in this broken world unless we feel that there are ways to create new collectivities and better—more open, more sensitive—ways of meaning-making.” (Kumjana Novakova)
