Women’s Antifascist Front, its magazines, and their contribution to women’s emancipation
In October 2023, we celebrate the 80th anniversary of the foundation of the Women’s Antifascist Front of Slovenia, a federal branch of the Women’s Antifascist Front of Yugoslavia (AFŽ). During World War II, all branches of AFŽ encouraged women’s participation in the armed resistance to fascism and Nazism, and supported their literacy and general education.
After the war, AFŽ’s federal women’s magazines were crucial for the emancipation of women. Just how crucial they were in the early years of socialism, and to which aspects of emancipation they contributed, will be discussed by taking a closer, comparative look at the Slovenian magazine Naša žena (Our Woman) and the Macedonian magazine Makedonka(Macedonian Woman).
Guest speakers: Jana Kocevska, the co-editor of the book Invisible archives: Makedonka (2022), Darko Leitner-Stojanov, a contributor to the book, and Nina Vodopivec, social anthropologist and researcher of Naša žena. Moderated by Tea Hvala.
This event is part of “Archeology of Resistance: Corrective for Future” program that is curated by Iva Kovač.
