As part of the exhibition Looking a — way: Othering in/of the (semi)periphery, currently on view at the tranzit.sk gallery in Bratislava, the seminar focuses on the complex history of peripheral European regions such as Central and Southeast Europe through the lens of decoloniality.
The seminar will present academic and artistic research to showcase various cases in the long history of othering - both the othering of European peripheries and the othering that these peripheries simultaneously (re)produce. Andreja Mesarič and Anna Ričář Libánská will focus on historical cases that have helped solidify racist stereotypes in Slovenia and the Czech Republic. Kvet Nguyen will present artistic research on the visual representation of the Vietnamese community in Slovakia during and after state socialism. Denis Kozerawski's short film Kambium1942 reveals local historical connections with the global colonial order while focusing on the ongoing discrimination of the Roma community in the region to this day.
After the presentations and the screening, the authors will join a discussion moderated by the curator of the Looking a — way exhibition, Iva Kovač.
