Kumjana Novakova

Kumjana Novakova (she/her) is a filmmaker, researcher, curator and lecturer, working in the fields of film and art since 2006. She is also the co-founder of the Pravo ljudski Film Festival in Sarajevo, and had worked as a film curator at the Museum of Contemporary Arts in Skopje between 2018 and 2021. She explores the languages of cinema in the relationships related to power, war, memories and (un)belonging. She is interested in developing strategies for creating meaning from the position of filmmaking, and its potentialities as a territory of new collectivities. Her work has been shown and exhibited all over the world: the film Disturbed Earth (co-directed by G.C. Candi) has been shortlisted for the Academy Awards, whereas Silence of Reason, which is currently still on a world festival tour, has already won more than 15 international awards: among others, the Best Directing Award at the IDFA Festival, the Best International Film Award at the Cinema du Reel and the Heart of Sarajevo for the best film dealing with the subject of human rights.
