Ice Magnolia

The novel Ice Magnolia by Marjana Moškrič
(Ljubljana: Cankarjeva založba, 2002) tells the story of a girl's coming
of age. In today's strange world, both Lucija's parents forsake her: her father
abandons the family for personal reasons, leaving his daughter to her already
overworked mother, who seeks consolation in a new partner. The relationships in
the family are further complicated when it becomes obvious that the newest
member of the family is interested not only in his wife.
Vanja Plut, Špela Stres

And how does one escape such lost relationships? …
"There is a loneliness that can be rocked. Arms crossed, knees
drawn-up; holding, holding on, this motion, unlike a ship's, smooths and
contains the rocker. It's an inside kind - wrapped tight like skin. Then there
is a loneliness that roams. No rocking can hold it down. It is alive, on its
own. A dry and spreading thing that makes the sound of one's own feet going
seem to come from a far-off place."
