Slovene Alternative Cultural Scene in the 80ies

In Slovenia,
the ‘80s are remembered as “the golden age” of different forms of alternative,
sub-, and contra-cultural movements. The Peace-movement, the Gay & Lesbian
Movement, punk, street-theatre, alternative performances, new trends in the
visual arts, forbidden fanzines, badges and posters, student clubs,
newspapers,... — in short all what’s today generally labelled as “Civil Society”
— have co-created the context of the Slovene “society in transition” (today’s
term for the ‘80s euphemism “socialism with a human face”). The roundtable
discussion deals with the following questions: What was the significance of the
alternative culture for the Slovene society in the ‘80s? What are the remains
of this culture produced in the last years of socialism? What was the role of
the Yugoslav “homeland” in these tendencies? What were the mutual influences
between the alternative scenes of the different Yugoslav republics? Or is the
story of Slovenia’s
“roaring alternative ‘80s” just a myth?
