Sleater-Kinney & Helium

Sleater-Kinney & Helium

The woman combat Sleater-Kinney started its
rocking ways near Olympia, WA, the city which in rock circles became famous with
the riot grrrls phenomena of bands such as Bikini Kill and Bratmobile. These two
groups were the major influence on Corin Tucker, who performed her first duet Heaven
To Betsy at the beginning of the '90's. After meeting Carrie Brownstein (Excuse
17) she formed the new all-woman group Sleater-Kinney to make the move from
uncompromising feminist activism. So far Sleater-Kinney have released three
albums which tend to express their feelings and point of view. With the new drummer
Janet Weiss, who has replaced the Australian Lora Macfarlane they have a simple
but very attractive, melodic, rock sound.

Line-up:
guitar, vocals: Carrie Brownstein, Corin Tucker; drums, percussion: Janet Weiss.

Helium is led by guitarist and singer Mary Timony
from Boston. Before forming this band she performed with me all-woman band Autoclave.
In Helium she performs with Ash Bowie on bass, which became famous after his work
with Polvo, and Shawn King Devlin (Dumptruck) on drums. More than catharsis, the
sound of Helium is a fairy, dreamy story, which only here and there for short moments
becomes fairly realistic. In fact, Helium is part of the new-wave of the '90's.

Line-up: guitar,
vocals: Mary Timony; bass: Ash Bowie; drums: Shawn King
