Bittersweet
Bittersweet explores the paradoxical complexity of living with
an invisible illness. In 2009 Canavan was diagnosed with M.E. The illness
imposes a severe reduction in Canavan’s ability to cope with aspects of normal
daily living and results in the artist feeling smothered by her own body while
her mind is forced to stay still. In this slowly unfolding performance Canavan
explores her feelings of being ‘left and lost’ and of her desire to leave those
feelings behind, transforming, blossoming and realizing what can transcend. The
relics of this ephemeral action will remain in the space as traces of life,
love and hope. (Nicola Canavan)
