Charly

Nicolas
is fourteen, a small-town boy living with his elderly foster parents. By chance
he finds a copy of Wedekind’s Spring’s Awakening with a postcard from Belle-Ile-en-Mer. He packs his
bags and heads for the open road. Just as accidentally he meets Charly, a young
prostitute who is hardly much older than him. She brings him to her home, an
abandoned caravan in the middle of nowhere. This strong-minded young woman
takes the adolescent - whose standard answer to any of her questions is “Sais pas” [i.e. “Dunno”] -
into her hands. What makes this simple coming-of-age story exceptional is its
consistent, uncompromising, direct, pure style and its unpretentious, brilliant
acting.
