Arts and Cultural Education on exhibition Who is afraid of ideology?

xx FOCUS MARWA ARSANIOS

Workshop for High Schools

Pupils are offered three entry points to Marwa Arsanios exhibition Who is afraid of ideology?. Through the exhibited works, the artist addresses different ideology understandings and applications, the position of feminism in modern society and its relationship to ecology, the trade-union organising of precarious care workers, the media influence on the public visibility of women, especially women liberation-movement fighters, as well as other ways of historicizing and representing political fights. The artist also deals with the role of political engagement in modern art, with an emphasis on documentary approaches.

As works by Marwa Arsanios are socially engaged and her approach experimental, this requires the viewer to be active and offers ideal entry materials to promote critical thinking. Here, the City of Women ACE programme draws inspiration from the Kurdish women’s movement pedagogical approach, addressed at the exhibition. This approach stresses the importance of teamwork and active cooperation as a path towards a successful self-defence against ruling ideologies, which may produce liberating effects.

Pupils are offered a mentor-led talk and teamwork (90min) on one of the following topics:

  • Ideology, social systems and ecofeminism
  • Representations of women in the media and in socially engaged modern art
  • Care work, trade-union organising and social equality.

Applications obligatory: contact@cityofwomen.org.
