In the introductory lecture to the Disobedient Muses programme, the curator will focus on the emergence of the feminist video collective Les Insoumuses in the 1970s France. Founded by actress and video maker Delphine Seyrig as well as her friend and video maker Carole Roussopoulos and translator and video maker Ioana Wieder, the collective later on (in 1982) created the pioneering Centre audiovisuel Simone de Beauvoir. 

This video production helps us reconsider the history of the feminist movement in France through a set of media practices and a network of creative alliances that emerged in a time of political turmoil with other feminist video collectives. Seyrig particularly appears as knitting nodes of a wider, plural, transnational fabric with cinematographer Babette Mangolte, poet and painter Etel Adnan, writer and activist Kate Millett, or philosopher Simone de Beauvoir. 

Multiple political concerns such as transnational political solidarity among women, the fight against structural sexism and racism, and the questioning of normative gender roles that the feminist movement was raising at this precise historical moment resonate with a set of problems concerning art and politics today, as feminists keep on building alliances.
