Disobedient Muses
International Film and Video Programme
The Disobedient Muses programme of films and videos is composed around Delphine Seyrig (1932–1990), legendary cinema and theatre actress best known for her roles in French auteur cinema. We dedicate the Focus Delphine Seyrig, Actress film programme to that cinema.
The Disobedient Muses programme is focused on the production of the French feminist video collective Les Insoumuses (a play on words that combines insoumise – unruly or disobedient – and muse). The collective was founded in the 1970s by Delphine Seyrig, her friend and video maker Carole Roussopoulos, and translator and video maker Ioana Wieder. Later on, in 1982, the collective also created the pioneering Centre audiovisuel Simone de Beauvoir.
The video production of Les Insoumuses helps us reconsider the history of the feminist movement in France through a set of media practices and a network of creative alliances with other feminist video collectives. The political concerns the feminist movement was raising at that historical moment also help us reconsider the present: they resonate with a set of problems concerning art and politics today, as feminists keep on building alliances.
