Paz Encina
Paz Encina is a film director and script writer. She obtained a Master’s Degree in Cinematography from the Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Between 2002 and 2003, she taught audio-visual expression and directing at the University of Asunción and at the Paraguayan Art Academy. Many of her films, including the trilogy of shorts Tristezas de la lucha (Sorrows of the Struggle, 2014–16) and the documentary Ejercicios de memoria (Memory Exercises, 2016), deal with historical events and draw on archival materials, most notably the so-called Archives of Terror – the documentation that the Paraguayan regime kept of its own human rights abuses. Yet Encina’s work is poetic, never realist. Her film Hamaca Paraguaya (Paraguayan Hammock, 2005) won the Un Certain Regard FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes. Eami (2022), her latest film, won the Tiger Award at the Rotterdam International Film Festival.
